US Court Deals Blow to Trump’s Tariff Policy, Ruling Exceeds Presidential Authority

A federal appeals court has delivered a significant setback to former President Donald Trump's economic agenda, ruling 7-4 that his administration overstepped its authority in declaring a national emergency to impose sweeping tariffs. The DC Circuit Court found the International Emergency Economic Powers Act doesn't grant presidents unilateral tariff powers—a authority reserved for Congress.

The decision threatens one of Trump's signature policy tools since returning to office in 2025. While generating record revenue, the tariffs have strained international trade relationships. Existing tariffs remain temporarily in place until October 14 as the administration prepares a likely Supreme Court appeal.
